This past couple of weeks have been an interesting time of personal growth. Business activities have taken me away from blogging and I am always frustrated when I lose consistency with my posting because I feel I get out of the groove.
The good news is each new day or week allows me to get back on track.
Meditation is Crap!
Several weeks ago one of my friends said to me, what’s all that meditation crap you’re doing on your blog? Do you really believe in all that $#%@?
I smiled and I told him my meditation was part of a much larger government conspiracy that was planning to take over the planet but he should not worry because I put in a good word for him. He looked at me slightly puzzled, we laughed and then talked about baseball.
What I've noticed is people in social settings have a hard time with those inner conversations about feelings, thoughts or even ideas. In the business world conversations tend to focus on presenting an image, demonstrating how smart or funny you are or achieving some goal or objective. We are so conditioned to look only at our outer world especially in business. We focus on our image, careers, financial portfolios, houses, cars, TVs or whatever.
Little recognition is given to the inner world, yet in my conversations lately I am noticing the inner part of every person - in plain view.
What do I mean by Inner World?
The outer world is what we do. We drive our cars, we go to work, we go shopping and we do things. The inner world is how we interact within our minds, our thoughts, feelings or what I call the inner self. Some people will mistake what I’m saying and think I’m talking about God or getting religious but I’m really not. You can be an atheist or even a scientist and still go inside and listen to your thoughts or your feelings.
Your belief in God has nothing to do with your inner world.
In social gatherings and with some practice it becomes easy to observe the inner world of others. When you connect on an inner level you get a sense of whether a person is honest, telling the truth, really interested in you or generally whether they are a good person.
If the other person is connected to their own inner self (either consciously or naturally) many times you will feel a great connection and there is an opportunity for awesome conversation.
Why is the Inner World Important?
When people ask me what has meditation and inner reflection taught me I tell them it has allowed me to connect better with people. From a personal level it has allowed me to be more real, be more in tune with what I want and have more fun. Most importantly it has allowed me to create a better outer world experience.
The inner and outer world exists in every person. The real question becomes how much time do we give to our inner experience and how do we create a balance between our inner and outer realities?
Next week I will post a review of Seth Godin and some ideas on social media.
In our society we get sucked into a number of conditioned behaviours, one being the idea of perfection. Many of us feel that to prosper we need to be perfect. Traditionally women have been conditioned to think constantly about their appearance or the need to be slim or beautiful. Men are conditioned with the need to make money and have a successful career. Many of us carry this burning need for perfection in whatever we do.
While it is good to strive for our goals it is our attachment, fixation and addiction to perfection that creates stress and suffering.
The Perfect Blog
In the blogging world I’ve found myself having this desire to build the perfect blog; to create quality posts, have perfect post frequency, great layout and design and hundreds or thousands of readers. The reality is my blog is imperfect at least according to the norms of the experts.
I’m learning however that perfection is in the eye of the beholder.
Here are 5 reasons why my blog is perfect:
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
If you look at Susan Boyle’s recent success she was able recognize her own perfection and overcome society’s pre-conceived assumptions about her appearance. My blog is the same in the sense that those who look deeply enough can see the perfection.
Learning is difficult when one starts at perfection
If my blog and experiences were too perfect then people might become suspicious and worse yet they might think it’s impossible to do what I do. Blogging, Facebook, Twitter and social media are the great equalizers of our generation and everyone should feel they can have a voice and more importantly express who they are. Marketed perfection is fake and provides no learning
Corporations have difficulty creating a real voice in the social media world because of corporate speak or too much fake marketing. Many bloggers attempt to be like corporations and create this illusion of perfection, but for readers their content feels contrived. My posts are not attempting to market the illusion of perfection. In the web world people want more authenticity.
Organic growth allows a person to evolve
By allowing my blog to grow naturally or with flow I’ve let go of the need to make everything perfect. If there is a bad post or a gap between posts it shows there is real person behind the site. This is good. Organic growth is better for me because my interest is in building relationships and a site that will be around in 10 years.
Perfection is about the journey not the destination
Most people see their goals as an end game. My life will be better after I have this experience. The exciting part of building this blog has been the opportunity to see it evolve and share the experience with others. Relaxing into the journey is part of the perfection.
Meditation Update
I’ve been following through with the meditation Deepak Chopra provided to the audience on Monday. This meditation has been so powerful that I’ve decided to increase my length of time in meditation to 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening. I’m feeling more empowered, centered and connected through this experience.
This meditation has helped me to connect to pranic breath (I think that’s what you call it). This is breathing that comes from a deeper place and is difficult to explain. If there are any experts on pranic breathing please send along any information.
Deepak Chopra through his books and recordings was the first to explain to me God or consciousness from a scientific perspective. On Monday April 27th I had the opportunity to hear Deepak once again during his visit to Toronto.
What Does Science Really Know About God?
There are many perspectives on what we call God or consciousness, so many in fact that we rarely agree. Our religious or spiritual traditions teach us how to live and within stories we are encouraged to have faith however the biggest challenge is so much is un-provable from a scientific perspective. Chopra and other ground breaking philosophers and scientists we are getting closer to helping us understand God.
We are not our bodies
Chopra tells the story of life from the perspective of our bodies, our minds, beliefs and our emotions. He says science shows us today that we are none of these. He uses examples from quantum physics that describe how with each breath we take in 10 to the power of 22 atoms from the universe. That’s 10 plus 22 zeros atoms from just one breath. When we breathe out we do the same and with the simple act of breathing these atoms are re-creating our bodies, our organs, our heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc.
He says within 3 years the human body recycles 98% of itself and what makes up your body today might be atoms from a plant, a snail or other human beings. He says each human living today has over a million atoms that were once in the body of Christ or Buddha but we also have a million atoms that once belonged to Hitler or Saddam Hussein.
We intimately share our bodies and yet we live in this illusion that we are separate.
Science has proven that we are not our bodies.
Our thoughts, beliefs, emotions, possessions and relationships
What about our thoughts, beliefs or emotions?
Deepak describes while we can understand the physical nature of the body and mind there is something within that is unexplainable.
He calls it awareness. Other philosophers call it consciousness, aliveness and some call it God.
Deepak goes on to say that awareness is non-local meaning it’s not necessarily located within our body or brain. In fact we don’t know where it’s located. He says it is both local and non-local at the same time meaning awareness within you or me is part of a much greater universal consciousness or universal mind.
Why Does Knowing about Awareness Matter?
Our bodies, our possessions, our relationships, our jobs and those things we think are real are actually not real at all. He says our interest in the material world is more like a “superstition” or even an “addiction” especially when they take over our life.
If our bodies, minds, relationships or possessions are not real then why are we here? This is where most people get lost in this teaching because each one of us has a job, families, mortgages, wants and desires. This is where it becomes important to listen to the next phase of what he says. By knowing we are awareness we have the ability to tap into that awareness and improve the quality of our lives.
What I like about Chopra is his willingness to go after the highest truth and although is a little mind bending what he speaks of makes sense. The next part describes how he gets in touch with that awareness.
A Meditation to Connect with Awareness
Here is a meditation for getting in touch with that awareness.
Close your eyes, relax, breathe, listen to your breathe and get comfortable.
Think about those areas of your life where you feel grateful. Having gratitude opens the doorway to awareness.
Put thought in what you want from your life from relationships, career, health, abundance, prosperity or whatever it is for you.
Silently meditate and repeat within your mind the mantra “I AM” “I AM” and continue to repeat for 15 or 20 minutes. If you get off track then just bring yourself back into the “I AM” mantra.
This meditation is designed to connect us with the universal consciousness or awareness. By connecting with our awareness we can tap into the power of the creative process or the universal mind.
Everything in this world once started as a thought. To create a chair there is first the thought, the planning, assembling the materials and then construction. All things from buildings, to artwork, and even relationships are created with thought first.
Art and it's Connection to the Soul
The day after Deepak we went to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) in Toronto and as I walked around looking at the works of art I began to connect with that sense of the awareness. Artwork sometimes can allow us to connect deeper within our soul.
One thing I know for sure is the awareness can only be explained to a certain point with words. In reality it can only be experienced.
I’m going to practice Deepak’s meditation of Gratitude, Desires and then the mantra of I AM and I’ll keep you posted on how that meditation comes together.
In my meditation practice I often find the experience differs from day to day. On some days meditation is about aligning my schedule or organizing my thoughts or letting my thoughts flow for an upcoming blog post. Other days there is simply a quieting of thoughts and listening. Other times my meditations carry a very heavy emotional burden or energy that I feel within my body.
This whole week has been about carrying a very heavy emotional energy.
We live in a world where crazy things happen and people do really dumb things. They hurt one another and sometimes they rarely recognize the damage they do with their actions. The psyche of human beings has been damaged over the course of history and when people grow they tend to inherit both positive and negative traits of their parents. On the negative side this includes deep seated hurt feelings, as well as negative beliefs, judgements, fears, anger and resentment.
When we take action that comes from a negative feeling within ourselves it always breeds a negative response. When we act from a negative place our actions are not voluntary but instead come from deeply held wounds within our unconscious and within our psyche.
This week my prayer is for all the people around the world who are suffering wit
Lately events in my life have centered on friends and family, several who are going through a variety of challenges. Most times we are limited as to how we can help others and the best we can do is provide good thoughts, loving support and encouragement.
The Healing Power of Directing our Thoughts for Others
One technique that I learned that might seem airy fairy to some is to visualize sending light, love and healing energy to those we care about.
The process is simple and can be done with a simple meditation.
Here are the steps:
Visualize the light and love from your own heart center. See it as a ball of light.
Visualize the gathering light, healing energy and love from the universe, God or whatever you want to call it. Or you can simply collect positive thoughts.
Send all that energy and surround the person or situation with a blanket of light and love. Put them in an incubator where the feeling is of love, safety, insight and healing of their situation.
This process does not require you to be with the person but if you are great!
By simply meditating and visualizing light and love surrounding another person there can at least be a calming effect on the situation and sometimes positive outcomes come from this process.
Don’t get too caught up about my process or the labels I use. For example you might send love, light energy, healing energy, positive thoughts or a prayer. There are entire prayer groups that do this kind of work.
Come up with a process that works for you.
Helping those with Physical Ailments
Recently my mother-in-law was in the hospital with an unknown illness. We were not sure what was happening. As we visited her in the hospital I chose to use my meditation (above) and then simply raised my hands while I was with her to allow the flow of positive energy to move through my hands to support her healing.
As someone who feels energy there was a great deal of heaviness (emotional & physical pain) so what I chose to do was simply pour light into her with the intent of supporting her in her own healing. Ultimately we all make our own healing choices. She was very open to having me stand over her and she told me whatever I was doing felt peaceful and calming.
Well the good news is after two weeks she began to recover and with what appear to be some physiotherapy work she should soon be back to normal. Whatever happened to her I could certainly feel the negative energy lift as she became better.
Self Healing Meditation
Lately I’ve been sending out a lot of energy to others but what I discovered is my own energy has felt depleted. I had forgotten about myself. So I chose to give myself a self healing meditation to help create more balance. What I didn’t realize was how badly I needed this.
Here is the process that I used:
Write down all the areas where you feel you are out of balance.
Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes and close your eyes and meditate.
Visualize a white light coming from your heart center and then take that light and hold it in your hands.
Bring your hands together and hold the light as if you are holding a ball. See the white light as you, your spirit and all those emotions, thoughts, feelings and areas where you feel out of balance.
With your eyes closed simply focus on the white light and direct your thoughts to providing more light, love and healing energy into the ball of light. See if you can feel the intensity and energy in your hands.
Breathe, focus your attention on the ball of white and keep doing so until the timer rings or you feel intuitively that you feel some relief.
After this meditation I went to bed. As I lay there about to go to sleep I lay on my back and then visualized my body wrapped in a cocoon and then I visualized surrounding my body in loving, light, healing energy.
When I woke up I felt balanced, refreshed and all the negative energy I was holding onto from the previous day had gone away. For me it’s a reminder that although helping others is good we also need to take care of ourselves.
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been putting some thought into a variety of topics. I’m in gathering mode trying to understand and put together some of the pieces of my life puzzle. Here are some of my insights from the past 2 weeks.
The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century
I’m reading Thomas Friedman’s book called, The World is Flat, a brief history of the 21st century. I have to admit I purchased the book a year ago but the 600 pages originally seemed a little daunting. The book was sitting on my shelf collecting dust but every now and then I could hear it calling my name, “Kevin…. Kevin….”
I’m glad I finally picked it up.
Technology & Globalization
Friedman talks about how technology and globalization are changing literally every aspect of our society and how nations, corporations and individuals are adapting or will adapt to that change. India, China, Eastern Europe, Russia and other developing nations are quickly emerging as dominant economies and the overall power structure within our world is changing.
He talks about outsourcing, increased competition, education, government policies and how we (meaning everybody) need to learn to think differently and plan ahead.
Did You Know Video
Here’s a great video that has been floating around on the Internet but that I recently found at Volker’s Blurb a blogger who talks about Life and Business.
How will we Adapt to the Coming Changes?
Make no mistake as the 21st century evolves China and India will become dominant economies, American and European influence will decline and world will establish a much more level playing field. Individually we need to understand these changes, adapt our lives and educate our children to prosper within this new economy.
Our changing reality is the main reason why I began talking about Meditation and the Life Balance Project but in future posts I want to discuss strategies on how we can adapt to the changes that are being thrust upon us by our changing world.
My Career Search
My career search has been a little slow partly because I’ve been balancing the process of wanting to find a job but also making sure that I find an opportunity that I want.
Cookie Cutters
Applying for jobs can be a daunting process because applicants are forced to put together a resume most of the time geared to a job description. Most companies still take a cookie cutter approach to recruitment and if you ever work with cookie cutters everything has to be cut the same way or it just doesn’t work. Sometimes it’s nice to just plop the dough on the tray and put the cookies in the oven. They usually taste better, especially if they’re chocolate chip.
Seriously though I recently took some advice from Chris Brogan and with insights from my World is Flat book and other sources and have updated my resume and Linkedin profile to showcase my talents.
Sales 2.0 and the Hybrid Salesperson
For years I have worked in software sales in the IT Industry and quite frankly I’ve found traditional selling techniques have become less effective in a Web 2.0 world. At one time in my career (from 1997-2004) I could make a call and send an email to a prospective customer and chances were good with a little persistence they would get back to me.
Today those same customers have more control and feel more empowered to do the research on their own but more importantly their time is limited often bombarded and overwhelmed with emails and the responsibilities of their jobs. Life has become significantly faster in the past 5 years and for salespeople there is less time to connect and make an impact. The best strategy is to become what I call a Hybrid Salespersonwho is someone who manages sales, social media, marketing, customer service, relationships and helps customer find solutions - all in one package.
Here is an article from Hubspot that compares a traditional sales funnel with the modern sales funnel. (See pages 2 and 3 of the article)
You'll notice from the Hubspot article that sales used to be in control of the sales funnel but today that process at best is shared and sometimes the influence of sales is non-existant. The reality is the world of selling has changed and companies are finding they need to adapt.
Work Balance & Looking Outside the Box
As I seek out my next career or consulting project I’m looking for organizations that use cookie cutters more as a frame of reference rather than set in stone commandments. That’s part of the main reason why I’ve started the Work Balance Project because I'm interested in companies who look outside the box and have high standards for their business, customers and employees.
In a flat world I recognize that some day soon I may be working for a Chinese, Indian, European, American or Australian company. In fact location won’t even matter. That prospect is exciting!!
Of all these talents the one I relate to best is that of a story teller or teacher. For companies wanting to tell their story I’m great at getting a message across whether written, spoken or in person.
Gratitude
Earlier in the week I posted about gratitude and what I've learned is that gratitude is all their is. I feel an incredible appreciation for my life, my family, my health, living in the country that I do (Canada), the opportunities that exist out there in the world and the people that I meet both online and in person. The worlds is good and as much as the world has problems there's a lot more good going on than bad. This is good to remember. The Weekend
The weekend is here. I’m looking forward to exploring the areas of work-life balance and finishing my World is Flat book. There are other books sitting on my table ready to be read. Maybe I’ll check out Twitter, do a little meditation, play my guitar and then go to the gym.
Sometime ago I wrote a post about finding my authentic voice. I’m not sure how many bloggers go through this process but I’ve certainly needed time to figure out what I want to say in a public forum. Even though I’m not a Gemini (I’m a Virgo) I must have about 12 distinct personalities all with something to say.
My Many Personalities
There is the inner reflective side of me that takes personal growth and a search for meaning and purpose to a primary level in my life. This has been prominent lately as I have been trying to figure out what I want to create with respect to my blog and also my career.
My analytical side has an interest in a wide variety of topics from history, economics, technology, current events, social issues, politics, business & government models.
My intuitive sidelikes to understand human behaviour, psychology and why we as humans do the things we do (good and bad).
And finally there's the visionary who wants to pull it all together, to understand the big picture of life, where we are today and we are going as a society, a people and planet.
For me the visionary, the analytical, the intuitive and the inner reflective personalities are one and it’s my belief that you can never really understand any one of the components without looking at them all.
So here’s where I’m taking all this.
Life Balance Project
Earlier in January I started to meditate and back then I said my interest was to talk about my experiences with meditation and personal growth in what I called the Meditation Project. What I found is meditation by itself is a limiting term and is only one factor that has contributed to my personal growth. Also I found people interpret meditation in a variety of ways (mostly good) but I found some people had a hard time relating to the term.
Instead of the Meditation Project I’ve decided to call what I’m doing the Life Balance Project. The Life Balance Project brings in a wide variety of personal growth strategies that people can use to improve the quality of their lives.
My FREE E-Book for the Life Balance Project will be available soon.
Work Balance Project
People are definitely looking for Life Balance. They are looking for more time, more peace and greater fulfillment within their relationships, careers, health and other aspects of their lives. Work and finances are part of that balance and is one major area where people have difficulty. Many of us work long hours in jobs we do not like for the sake of financial security. As a society we are out of balance within our mindset about work, some of this is self created, but much in my opinion is created by our business and economic models, our corporate structures and our traditional approaches to leadership and management.
People are looking for new ways to interact with their careers, to be part of a team, to love what they do and have a certain flexibility that allows them to balance their careers with their lives. There are some great companies today who understand this need for work balance and who have put together innovative approaches to create positive working environments for their employees.
The Work Balance Project will look at corporations, organizations, leadership models and how these can be (or are being) applied in our business world today. This discussion will be about the good news stories, companies who have innovated and who foster positive employee-employer partnerships.
If you are with a company and have a story to tell please contact me or connect with me on Twitter.
My FREE E-Book on the Work Balance Project will be available soon.
Visions for the Future
Through this discussion I plan to take the topics of Life Balance, Work Balance, technology, social media and business models and talk about how our lives are changing and offer some visions for the future. At heart I’m a futurist with keen desire to see this world become a better place and I want to make sure that I bring voice to what I see as our potential opportunities for the future. I’m most excited about these discussions.
For those of you who have joined me on my personal growth journey I appreciate all your comments and support. Although personal growth will continue to be part of my discussion I think you will be pleased with how I bring Work Balance, Life Balance and Visions for the Future together.
Thanks once again for your support and joining the conversation.
Few people have ever considered aligning with the natural flow of their lives. We are so caught up in our careers, family and other responsibilities and rarely do we take time to look at what we are doing and ask; Is this what I really want? Time flies and often we wake up in the morning, get busy and before we catch our breath the day is over and we wonder where all the time went.
The demands on our time can feel overwhelming.
Meditation, Intuition & Focusing on the Positive
Over the last few weeks I’ve been putting my focus on the concept of flow with a desire to bring the experience more fully into my life. Starting with meditation I now meditate every day to calm my mind, relax and observe the thoughts, feelings and sparks of creativity that come up for me. Listening to my intuition is the next step and is critical for this process. I’ve learned that negative thoughts, feelings or reactions are an indication that flow is missing. Only by shifting to the positive thought or feeling am I able to get into flow.
Focusing on the positive takes effort; it requires awareness and an attitude (which can include affirmations or visualizing) to consistently bring me back to the state where I want to be.
What is Flow?
The best example I can use to describe flow comes from sports. An (American) football quarterback having a great game where every pass seems to connect and every play moves the ball forward is in flow. His team wins and he becomes the hero.
The professional golfer who consistently hits every drive or putt perfectly is another example. There appears to be more than just skill, focus or determination at work for an athlete when they’re in the flow. They have trained their body and mind for years but what I'm finding is it’s not just conditioning that creates flow. Even the best athletes can have a bad game.
For me the definition of flow goes beyond our body or conscious mind. Flow is when our conscious mind steps aside and we allow our unconscious or intuition to guide us. Flow is when we just let go.
Why is Flow Important?
Many believe that success comes from our ability to use our mind, set goals, commit to action and stay organized and focused. While there is some merit to this advice, in my experience action without flow is useless. If you look at nature, instinct and natural flow are the only rules to the game.
As a society we pay a heavy price for not going with the flow of our lives, the results being stress, poor health, damaged relationships, career or financial frustrations.
What’s your Flow Like?
Whether managing your finances, your career, family, finding a job or building your business, a good question to ask is; how is my flow going? Does your mind and experience consistently flow in a positive direction or do you find yourself getting trapped in negative thinking, stress or frustration?
Here are 6 steps for what I’ve learned so far about bringing flow into my life.
This is a work in progress so be patient or feel free to offer suggestions.
What does flow feel like for you? – Go back to a time when something was flowing for you. How did it feel? What were you thinking? What was the situation? If you know what flow feels like you have a reference point.
Where is your flow level RIGHT NOW? – How smoothly do your days generally go? Is there a natural rhythm that kicks in or do you find each day a struggle? Are some days better than others? Take specific parts of your life and ask how much flow is there in my career, finances, relationships, health, family, etc.
Where would you like to be? – Don’t be afraid to dream big on this one. Think of your goals and your life. What would your life feel like if you were totally in the flow? Write it all down.
Focus on the present moment and let your intuition be your guide – Begin to use meditation, intuition, journaling, dreams, to become aware of your thoughts in each moment. Negative thoughts are usually a good indicator that flow is not happening. When you have a negative thought become aware and go to the next step.
Learn to shift your thoughts, feelings and beliefs from negative to positive as much as you can – Use affirmations, visualizations, law of attraction methods or whatever techniques work for you. Here are some of the resources that have helped me. (Zen Habits, Good Vibe Coach, Abraham Teachings, Inner Noodle) There is so much available to teach us how to shift our thoughts.
Be kind to yourself – Recognize that moving into a positive flow is a process that can take time, it doesn’t happen overnight especially if you’re used to a life that has been a mixed bag of flow and non-flow experiences.
Flow is the engine that brings balance and good things into our lives. Without flow action, goals or focus are pointless.
Moving towards positive thoughts and listening to our intuition are guides that can direct us into flow. Flow allows us to make better decisions and move more confidently toward the outcomes that make us happiest.
Last week was somewhat fragmented for posting although in terms of insights and personal growth it was fantastic week! This week I have some announcements but first here are some thoughts on meditation and what can happen when you commit to any form of personal growth practice.
My Experience with Meditation
Meditation allows you to reduce the chatter within your mind and connect more fully with your inner source or inner intuition. However, when you start silencing the mind, old thought patterns, beliefs and emotions can come to the surface. Often the experience comes in the form of mental or emotional resistance which I have found is an opportunity to break through old beliefs, fears or behaviours. When resistance comes up I’ll usually meditate, journal, listen to my intuition (or dreams) or ask for ideas from others who I can trust to understand and work through the lesson.
My lesson has been to let go of rigid thought patterns and allow my intuition to guide and move me more into the natural flow whether I'm writing, searching for a new career or dealing with events that come up. Over time meditation allows you to build your intuition muscle which in my experience becomes an invaluable guide for making decisions.
Guest Post at Baby Boomers Knowledge Center
Martin Diano at Baby Boomers Knowledge Center asked me to write a guest article which is due to be published this week. The article is called “Baby Boomers and the Technology Generation Gap”
Featured Articles will soon be Available in PDF Format
There were a few feature articles that I had written in the past that had a lot of hits. I wanted to start filing these articles a little better and making them easier for new visitors to see. These articles will be available this week.
This weekend we had an open house for our new grand daughter.
Babies have such a mesmerizing effect on adults. They take us back to a time when life was simpler and it’s interesting to watch adults (myself included) open up around babies. We must see something in a baby that maybe we have forgotten. Whatever it is we can learn from babies about how to live naturally and be in the moment.
Here are 4 Things babies can teach us:
How to Sleep & Feel Rested
Young babies require a lot of sleep. I’m amazed at how deeply they sleep and how restful their sleeps seems regardless of external noise or distractions. As life gets more complex we sometimes lose our ability to sleep soundly, feel rested or relax.
Be Free of Thought, Opinions or Judgments
Because their brains are not yet fully developed babies seem to have little thought and I’m guessing no opinions or judgments. They do seem to be able to sense when something is not right for them (intuition) but you can guarantee a baby won’t judge you for the shoes you’re wearing or hold a grudge.
Transforming our Emotional States
Babies can experience a myriad of emotions within a very short time. One moment a baby can be crying or screaming and at the next moment cooing and feeling relaxed, happy and content. Adults tend to hang on to our emotional states for longer periods and can carry a grudge for hours or weeks at a time. Babies show us that we can quickly transform our emotional states.
Love, Happiness & Fun
Babies naturally know how to smile, laugh, love and have fun. When they are in this state you can tell they are in the moment enjoying the experience. All babies want to be loved and do not carry the emotional and thought baggage. When they feel loved then play and fun are natural responses to the environment around them.
Meditation, yoga or tai chi often teach us to become aware and let go of our thoughts, relax our bodies, and let go of rigid emotions or judgements. It’s ironic that we start out this way, go out in the world and learn about life and then at some stage we long to go back to the place where we started.
